Meet Your Trainer

Sandra Beaulieu has been a horse trainer and an artist for over 30 years!

Sandra Beaulieu - Art

Trainer & Artist

Sandra has been an artist since she first fell in love with horses as a child. She never imagined that one day she would be painting with them! She used her trick training skills to teach her Friesian gelding Douwe how to paint back in 2019. As he was getting older he could no longer perform under saddle so painting was a great way to spend valuable time together. Douwe was very smart and goofy, he loved to make people laugh and was painting up until the day he died. After grieving his loss Sandra began working with her Lipizzaner cross gelding Rovandio. It took him longer to learn but his artistic skills are improving by leaps and bounds! Sandra is also a Grand Prix level dressage trainer, author of "FREESTYLE: The Ultimate Guide to Riding, Training, and Competing to Music", and has performed at events such as Equitana, the Equine Affaire, and BreyerFest to name a few.

Meet Michelle her horse Halo

Learning how to paint gave Halo confidence and purpose!

“I affectionally call Halo "my Thoroughbred in a draft body". Uptight and high-strung, she went to several professional horse trainers before it was decided she would be best as a pasture companion. On a whim, I asked Sandra to teach us how to paint. Sandra tailored her approach to fit the both of us, and it wasn't long before Halo's confident was soaring. Sandra's online program does a fantastic job of simplifying the process, while at the same time allowing for all the complexities that different horses and handlers present."

FAQ

  • How do I know if my horse is capable of painting?

Most owners have a good sense of their horses's personality. If your horse likes to interact with you, pick up objects, and has a sharp mind they are a good candidate for painting. There is no guarantee that your horse will learn how to paint but you will learn the basics of trick training and body control that will improve your relationship with your horse.

  • How long does it take to teach my horse how to paint?

Every horse is different and learns on their own timeline. It also depends on the training experience and timing of the owner, the dedication of time, and patience to invest in the time it takes to train your horse. Most training sessions are between 5-10 minutes but consistency and frequency are key.

  • Is this a good activity for my horse on stall rest?

YES! Teaching your horse how to paint is a great activity to engage the mind and deepen your bond. It will give your horse something to look forward to and create a positive experience out of something that would otherwise seem negative.

  • Do horses like to paint?

YES! In my experience all of my horses have enjoyed painting, they love the positive interaction and once they understand the painting process they seek the brush and will choose to paint and stay with me with no halter.

  • Is painting good for older horses?

YES! I began teaching my Friesian horse Douwe when he was retiring from riding. He suffered from ringbone and arthritis so we were only able to do walk trail rides. But he was so smart and loved to learn so that is when I taught him how to paint.

  • Is painting good for young horses that have not been started under saddle?

I recommend this painting course for horses that have had basic training and good ground manners. Trick training could make a horse mouthy if not properly used. If you are unsure just send me an email at [email protected].
